Knowing Jesus: Week 6 Col 2:1–7

March 19, 2025

Introduction

Kick of the discussion with prayer followed by this week’s reading and discussion questions

You can use the kick off prayer below (or do your own), and give time for others to pray into the night together.

Example kick off prayer: Father we praise you for gathering us together. Despite whatever weighed on our hearts as we entered this house, we pray that your Spirit guides our time together and free us from anything that is not of you. We pray that by the strength of your might we may speak truth in love to one another. We pray that we are led by the gifts of your spirit, so that we may build up one another and your church as a whole. As we read your word, we pray that we may be filled with the knowledge of your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner pleasing to you.

Passage: 1 I want you to know how hard I am contending for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. 2 My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4 I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. 5 For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how disciplined you are and how firm your faith in Christ is. 6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

The New International Version (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2011), Col 2:1–7.

Discussion

  • What is the goal of Paul’s fighting for the church, and ultimately his letter? (v3)
  • Why is it important to know Christ? (v4)
  • What are some “fine-sounding” arguments that you are contending with now within yourself or loved ones?
  • What are the roots of these arguments, and how are you seeking to find or share Christ amongst the struggle?

Share with one another and pray for one another. Pray for guidance and the full riches of complete understanding, in order that you may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ in his fullness!

Habit of Grace

Habit of Grace: Service

Service is one way that we are “united in love”.

  • If you know, what is your love language?
  • How have you been blessed by the service of another?
  • Did it make you feel loved, how and why?

Discuss, pray and encourage one another.
