What is 'the Gospel'?
The word “gospel” comes from a Greek word euangelion, which literally means “good news.” It refers to the message of hope, forgiveness, and a new beginning that is offered to all people, through believing in Jesus Christ.
The Gospel is, quite simply, the message of Jesus - who He was, what He did for us, and what that means for our lives.
How is the Gospel possible?
God's love for us is unwavering, but when we mess up (sin) we create a separation between us and God. To restore that relationship, God came to earth as a living, breathing, human being - Jesus. He lived a sinless life, and sacrificed Himself on the cross as payment for our sins. Jesus then rose from the dead, offering forgiveness and reconciliation with God.
By trusting in Jesus and embracing His sacrifice, we can be forgiven, restored, and receive the promise of eternal life. Doing so saves us from eternal separation from God (Hell) when our life comes to an end.
It is a free gift - you cannot earn it.
We can’t ever earn God's approval (grace) by being a perfect person. The gospel is not based on what you do, but on what’s already been done by Jesus. So we can only receive forgiveness and the new start Jesus offers us, just as it is - a gift.
Think of it like this: Imagine you're in debt. So deep that no matter what you do, you'll never be able to pay it off. Then, someone you’ve never met steps in and pays your debt in full, asking for nothing in return. This is essentially the message of the gospel: a free gift of grace that is a truth to be believed, embraced, and lived out.
Jesus welcomes you from wherever you are.
Perhaps you’re struggling with an addiction. Depression. Anger. Perhaps you have just been diagnosed with a terminal illness, or a struggling with the death of your spouse. Or perhaps, no matter how much you seem to achieve - marriage, finances, children, career - you can’t help but feel a ongoing emptiness.
God will call you from whatever stage you currently find yourself in. For He does not call the qualified, He qualifies those He calls. ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness’
“The gospel says you are simultaneously more sinful and flawed than you ever dared believe, yet more loved and accepted than you ever dared hope.”
